Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How will my 6 year old who cannot read or write do all of this writing?

A. With practice! We will help the younger kids with writing by doing copy work, drawing pictures to illustrate their thoughts and writing words and letters where possible. This is where it is so helpful to have one-on-one attention from a tutor who can help each child where they are at. Ideally we would love to help teach reading during some of the writing time to those who are still working on reading as well.

Q. What does being a tutor entail?

A. We ask our tutors to arrive on time (between 8:50 and 8:55 a.m.) to their volunteer days, dressed in business dress or business casual clothing. Our students wear uniforms and as tutors we also want to arrive dressed for a day of study and learning. We expect all tutors to show patience and kindness to our students as we hope to become their trusted mentors. You do not have to have a teaching degree to tutor—if you are kind and patient, enjoy being around children, and feel capable of walking a student through elementary math lessons and helping guide them through writing, you can do this! We will ask students working on level 4 math and higher to please bring an answer key along with their workbook.

All prospective tutors will go through a brief interview process before being accepted. Tutors who are selected will be expected to attend one or more meetings before the school year begins to further discuss details.

Q. Is the library location set in stone?

A. No, but it is the best option we have found to meet our needs so far. We have been communicating with the library about this possibility. We will need to secure it for the dates we want by paying upfront as soon as possible if it seems like our best option this year, but we are currently gauging interest and continuing to look for places that might allow us to store books, sensory bins, blocks, etc. Those things would need to be transported to the library each day, which would be cumbersome. So if you have a lead on a beautiful place we could potentially rent or eventually purchase, please let us know!

Q. What is the parking like at the library? And is the room wheelchair accessible?

A. If we hold class in the Provo library, there is parking above ground and underneath ground. Parents can drive through the underground parking to drop off their kids, which will be so nice in rainy or snowy weather! And yes, the Young Card room #308 is on the third floor but is entirely wheelchair accessible as there are elevators on each floor.

Q. Why is the down payment to secure a seat $350?

A. Because that is the minimum amount we will need to secure a building to meet in for a 8 months.

Q. Will I be able to use OpenEd, Harmony, or Utah Fits All money to pay for tuition?

A. Yes! Lark Rise is filing as a non-profit corporation in the state of Utah and as such will be considered an educational organization.
